Der Wind und der Löwe - Rules?

I pulled out my copies of Rampant Colonialism (RC) and Soldier's Companion (SC) a couple of nights ago (and found out that somehow I have two copies of the latter), just to get a feel of what type of rules I want to use for the new project.  Before I go any further, I must say that I am not a huge fan of The Sword and the Flame...I know, a blaspheming heretic, right?  I just didn't like the feel of TSATF when I played them many years ago.  It has been years since I have played SC as well, but from what I remember it gave a decent game, especially with the fieldcraft ratings and rules.  But I believe all the aforementioned rules have a slightly higher command structure than what I envision.  I see each player running a faction, maybe 10-15 figures, or a machinegun with crew, and that is all the command they would have.  I know that TSATF and SC can provide fairly bloody combat results, meaning that a unit of figures could take several casualties in one turn, which would not work for my 10-15 figure commands as a player could get knocked out of the game fairly quickly.  Potentially not a good gaming experience.

What I seek then is something a bit smaller in scope.  I was taking a look at The Men Who Would Be Kings, but in reading several blog reviews it seems to be larger in scale as well.  Fire and Steel seems to be a decent set of rules, but perhaps a tad too small scale as one tracks wounds and each individual figure has three actions, which I see bogging down a game with multiplayers.

So, I am looking for something in between and am open to suggestions.

  1. Colonial Adventures from Rebel Miniatures (designed by Two Hour War-games) might suit your desired game size. http://www.wargamevault.com/product/190171/Colonial-Adventures?term=colonial&test_epoch=0 Some like the Reaction System, some don't. I would check out teh free rules on the THW site and see how you feel about teh system before buying.

    1. I have those rules as a pdf...gave them another look over yesterday. They may work. I've played FNG and actually liked how the rules flowed. Thanks!

  2. Are you interested in skirmish or larger scale gaming?

    1. Skirmish for certain, with each player running a faction of 10-15 figures, which means something potentially bloody like TSATF is out.

    2. Mine might work then? They can be freely downloaded from http://herkybird.tynesidewargames.co.uk/colonial.html

    3. From a scale perspective those might work! I'll have to print them out and give them a bit of a playtest. Thanks!

  3. I tend to play TMWWBK using the skirmish level, that is half size units. So a 24 point force of standard regular infantry would be 24 figures (4 x 6 men). For multi-player games i sometimes cut it down to 18 points per player, so most forces will be between 18 and 32 figures per player. If that helps at all.

    1. Hey SJ - That helps a bit...still looking for 10-15 figures per player, but perhaps with an MG added that would give enough for single person to command? Thanks!

  4. I quite like Ganesha Games Flying Lead for small 'modern' actions

    1. Hmmm, you are not the only person to have mentioned that...so they are small scale and suitable for earlier periods? Does the Hearts & Minds supplement bring any other useful rules? Thanks!
